Youthzone provides playful, fun and engaging weekend respite sessions for disabled young people aged between 10-16 years old. The aim of the service is to support the young people to develop their self-help skills and social skills as well as building a social/peer group whilst giving their parents some weekend respite. The young people can participate in a range of activities including arts and crafts, cooking, trampolining, puzzles, basketball, outings and many more. Activities are based on young people’s interests and the young people are encouraged to let us know what they would be interested in trying the next time they attend the service.

About the role

We are currently recruiting for Support Workers/Practitioners to work in our weekend services for children and young people with additional support needs based in Edinburgh. We are looking for people who can provide fun, meaningful activities such as baking, arts and crafts, games, sports, trips in the community and outdoor play to support young people to have lots of fun!

We have a flexible approach to the shifts you work, working hours are between 9.30am – 2.30pm at Weekends. As a relief member of staff you can choose the shifts you wish to work!

If you are a qualified childcare practitioner (SVQ3/HNC Childcare qualification) this is extremely desirable however not essential, Capability Scotland will provide mandatory training and can support you to complete an SVQ level qualification in relation to the role!

As a Support Worker, you will be a key member of the team, providing:

  • High standards of support to our customers
  • A creative and caring approach
  • Opportunities to build strong relationships with our customers, their families and other supporting professionals
  • Encouragement and support to live as independently as possible
  • Participation in activities is a key tasks for the role, so energy and initiative is vital.

What you need to know

While experience is great, we are really looking for people with the right values. You should have excellent communication skills and be flexible and empathetic.

Location: between both of our Edinburgh Service locations, Craigmiller 11 Harewood Road, Edinburgh, EH16 4NT & Riccarton Research Avenue North, Edinburgh, EH14 4AP

Driving Licence desirable but not essential, as long as able to travel (as required) to meet our young people’s needs.

Experience/qualifications/key skills required

Experience of working in a similar role and environment is desirable as is a willingness to undertake any personal development opportunities. You should have a care related SVQ Level 3, or the willingness to gain this qualification in a given timescale. You should possess good interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team and on your own initiative.
