Argyll and Bute is a place like no other in Scotland - it is an area of outstanding beauty, with mountains, sea lochs, 23 inhabited islands, six main towns and more than 3,000 miles of coastline. It is one of the largest and most sparsely populated local authority areas in Scotland and has a population of 88,050 scattered across an area of nearly 2,700 square miles. It stretches from Helensburgh in the East, part of the Glasgow commuter belt, to the remote island of Tiree in the west and from the Mull of Kintyre in the south to the growing town of Oban in the north. This mix of urban communities, remote rural villages and a significant island population makes Argyll and Bute the most diverse local authority area anywhere in the UK, bringing a wealth of culture as well as challenges to delivering services.

The region attracts visitors from across the globe to high profile sporting events such as the Tiree Wave Classic – a world famous windsurfing event.

There are plenty of local sport and leisure facilities in the area, including Aqualibrium in Campbeltown and the Riverside Swim and Health Centre in Dunoon. While Oban's Corran Halls and Dunoon's Queen's Halls play host to a range of local and national performers.

Our primary schools consistently exceed national targets in reading, writing and mathematics. In national tests, Argyll and Bute is at the top end of Scottish attainment. Over 90% of the region's secondary pupils gain at least five standard grades, around 20% are awarded three or more Highers, and a higher than average number of pupils from the region go onto higher education.
