Living in East Dunbartonshire
Natural environment; positive attributes
East Dunbartonshire lies to north of Glasgow, bounded by the Campsie Fells and the Kilpatrick Hills. It is a strategically significant location for economic, social and environmental development between the city, the gateway to the Highlands, through the West Highland Way and eastwards through the Kelvin Valley. It has a population of around 108,500 and comprises the suburban and rural towns and villages of Bearsden, Bishopbriggs, Kirkintilloch, Lennoxtown, Lenzie, Milngavie, Milton of Campsie, Torrance and Twechar.
East Dunbartonshire provides an outstanding natural environment and has many positive attributes. It is a flourishing area, with relatively high levels of home and car ownership. The region offers a healthy environment with life expectancy rates well above the national average and is one of the safest areas in Scotland in which to live, with levels of recorded crime well below the national average.
Local schools consistently achieve high attainment levels, and performance rates for pupils achieving three or more higher are well above the national average, while unemployment is substantially lower than in other areas of Scotland.
Our Leisure centres are well used and have four star status by VisitScotland. A new state-of-the-art leisure centre is being developed to replace the Allander Leisure facility and this is scheduled to open in 2022.
East Dunbartonshire has seen an increase in population over the last 10 years which is expected to continue. Similar to most areas throughout Scotland, we have an aging population, with an increase in the number of people aged 65 and over and most significantly in the 75+ age group. There has been a slight increase in the number of children aged 0-15 and the number of people of working age over the last five years. This trend is forecast to continue for the next decade.
