Currently, there is one Science Technician post available within the school. The successful candidate will be directly responsible to the Faculty Leader of Science.

THE ROLE

This role will suit someone who is keen to work in a very busy environment. The candidate will be expected to support the teaching staff and pupils as required.

This role is ideal for a capable and confident individual who is willing to take on a variety of tasks. The chosen candidate will need to be well organised and have excellent time management skills.

Full training will be provided, but we require a positive attitude and a commitment to providing a first class service to our school pupils, teachers and parents.

Applicants are required to have five National 5s at C Level or above (or equivalent) including English, Maths and either Chemistry, Physics or Biology.

Requirements of Science Technician:

  • Computer literacy with knowledge in Microsoft Office 365 (Word/Excel/Outlook)
  • Excellent communication skills both written & verbal

  • Ability to work and remain calm under pressure and keep to tight deadlines

  • Post qualification experience in a laboratory environment, preferably within the education system is desirable.
  • Level 3 Microbiology certificate desirable/willing to work towards.
  • Animal husbandry certificate desirable/willing to work towards.
  • Good knowledge of relevant Health and Safety regulations.

Duties of Science Technician are noted below but not limited to:

  • Preparing materials, equipment and teaching areas for use by teachers and pupils.
  • Assisting in demonstrating the use of equipment and apparatus to teaching staff and senior pupils.
  • Supporting senior pupils with advanced higher projects.
  • Supporting the class teacher with science club (after school activity).
  • Designing and constructing equipment and apparatus for use in experiments.
  • Maintaining an adequate range of stock levels. This includes monitoring, controlling and keeping financial records of department expenditure and completion of purchase orders for final approval by the Faculty Leader in line with purchasing procedures.
  • This post holder will also ensure that the stores are well organised and hazardous materials are safely stored, maintained and disposed of.
  • Ensuring that materials and equipment are maintained in good order and in a safe condition.
  • Ensuring that the preparation room, fume cupboards and laboratories are kept in a safe and tidy condition.
  • Monitoring stock levels, re-ordering and issuing work sheets as required.
  • Undertaking relevant administrative duties i.e. equipment lists, inventories, statistical returns, laminating, photocopying.
  • Ensure that living materials (plants and livestock) are kept in good health.
  • Prepare laboratory standard solutions.
  • Using their knowledge and keeping abreast of new developments.
  • Using new technology equipment and techniques where appropriate.
