Learning and Skills Services (Scottish Prison Service)

HMP Kilmarnock (Learning Centre)

Temporary until 31 July 2025.

About the Role

Join our dynamic team in creating a positive learning atmosphere within our Learner Centres, encouraging learner interest and motivation whilst supporting learners in the achievement of their short and long-term aspirations.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver and assess approved SQA qualification up to and including SCQF Level 5 and accredited and non-accredited qualifications in a range of subject areas, experience in delivering creative arts would be desirable

Update learning materials as required to meet learners’ needs and interests within the context of the prison environment.

Participate in learner enrolment and completion of learner documentation as required. Providing support and guidance to learners as and when required.

Follow agreed quality assurance processes and procedures.

Work in collaboration with colleagues, partners, agencies and SPS to improve the learners’ experience.

Provide and take responsibility for reporting on a range of information including learner’s progress, which you will also input on to PR2.

Qualifications

  • Essential:
  • Educated to minimum HNC or equivalent (SCQF Level 7) in relevant area
  • Qualification in SALL (Supporting Adult Literacy Learners) SCQF level 6 or other community-based learning qualification – or be willing to work towards this qualification
  • SQA units aligned to the national Occupational Standards for assessment, planning and internal verification, or be willing to work towards.

  • Assessor / Verifier awards

Experience

  • Essential:
  • Experience working with offenders or hard to reach learners
  • Knowledge of the SQA Framework.
  • Desirable:
  • Knowledge of a range of awarding bodies.
  • Knowledge and experience of Project Based Learning
  • Proven track record of working a range of partners to deliver learning outcomes.
  • Experience of working with learners with Learning Difficulties and Disabilities.

  • Keep up to date with developments in learning methodologies and own subject area.

Training

As this position is based within a prison setting, the successful candidate(s) will be required to complete mandatory in-house SPS Training, which includes classroom work as well as scenario based physical movements for self-defence purposes.
