CREATING BRIGHTER FUTURES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
Up to 1 in 4 young people will be unemployed in 2021. A youth unemployment crisis has been caused by the coronavirus pandemic with a disproportionate impact on young people. Young people living in poverty are twice as likely to be out of work. We're here to change that.
Street League uses the power of sport to tackle poverty and give young people the opportunities they need to succeed in life and the workplace. From school to the world of work, we work with young people aged 14-30, living in the UK’s most disadvantaged communities. Our staff help them overcome their practical and personal barriers to employment.
Joseph Rowntree Foundation gives context to ‘poverty’ in the UK. “Poverty means not being able to heat your home, pay your rent, or buy the essentials for your children. It means waking up every day facing insecurity, uncertainty, and impossible decisions about money. It means facing marginalisation – and even discrimination – because of your financial circumstances. The constant stress it causes can lead to problems that deprive people of the chance to play a full part in society.”
