Scottish Canals

The British Waterways Board, operating as Scottish Canals, continues in Scotland as a stand alone public body following the transfer of the functions of the British Waterways Board in England and Wales to the Canal & River Trust on 2nd July 2012. Scottish Canals now operates across a wide variety of sectors and remits, from the Falkirk Wheel and Kelpies in the Lowlands, to new hospitality and tourism offerings across the network, the maintenance of the canals themselves, and our many commercial moorings and residential properties. This provides interesting and challenging opportunities to be part of a progressive business, where we work to preserve the canals whilst transforming them through sustainable management, investment and regeneration. Although they are 250 years old, Scotland's canals continue to contribute to the economic prosperity of this nation, in much the same way that they did when they were built. While the goods and people they once transported powered the industrial revolution, today the canals make an important and significant contribution to Scotland's economy. Having restored the canals over the last 10 years we are now driving their renaissance with exciting plans for the future.
